Professor Jonathan Sterne
Director
Jonathan Sterne is Director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Bristol BRC), co-Director of Health Data Research UK South-West, and Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at Bristol Medical School.
He aims to apply modern data science approaches to translational research using trusted research environments/secure data environments that contain linked electronic health record data on up to 55 million people. He leads a large team that conducts analyses examining the effectiveness of vaccines against COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of healthcare interventions, and the effects of winter pressures on NHS healthcare. Many of these analyses use modern methods for making causal inferences from observational data.
Jonathan’s other research interests include systematic reviews and meta-analyses and the clinical epidemiology of HIV and AIDS.
